Literature Text

When Ana and Mia enter your mind
You start to believe their fatal lies.
Don’t eat this, don’t you dare eat that
You’ll gain weight, you’ll look too fat.

You’ll let them in, they take control
And it’s your body that’s taking the toll.
But you’ll be empty, and empty is pure
You’ll test the limits to what your body endures.

You fast for a day, then one day becomes three
Your body craves food, but you ignore the pleas.
Sure, you’re thinner and the bones start to show
You’re tired and weak, can you see that though?

Then one day you slip and you start to binge
Eating everything in the cabinets and fridge.
What do you do with all that food you’ve consumed?
You must throw it up, get it out, you conclude.

Starve and restrict is what Ana instructs
If you eat, Mia demands that you throw it up.
After a while you’re frail, fragile, confused
You’ve lost yourself, you realize bemused.

You’ve lost weight, but you need to lose more
You need to be thinner than ever before.
When Ana and Mia enter your mind
You sadly believe their cruel, fatal lies.
A poem about anorexia and bulimia
